Below are just a few examples of how the Open Ocean Membership can work for you!

  • Pace yourself: start with a course such as Introduction to Sailing, then "Hold" your account (i.e., billing stops) while you gain some practical experience, and then re-start the membership when you're ready to tackle the next level of courses - until you reach your sailing goal.
  • If you're ambitious: You could sign up, knock out all of the required 10 courses (realistically about 2 months, $48) and log the required sailing days for the Captain 25 Challenge. We turn off your billing and you keep ALL of the courses. Or rather, you'll gain access to 22 courses (worth over $400) for completing the Captain25 Challenge.
  • Prep for a Sailing Vacation: You could sign up, take and pass all the courses in the Bareboat Charter Master Bundle and then put your account on hold. If you did all those courses in 2 months, you'd beat the $175 BBCM bundle cost, achieve the BBCM rank and keep access to your Resume and Logbook. AND if you book a sailing vacation through NauticEd, you'll save an additional $100 off your yacht charter.
  • Improve your sailing competency: simply sign up and take the courses that you need, whether that's docking, anchoring, sail trim, or any available online course!

Grant's 'Captain 25' Challenge:

As my statement says – the adventure was born out of my thirst for learning and now the desire to share that learning. I want to offer the adventure to you. And so I’ll give you a challenge worthy of any Adventurer! I call it "Captain 25".

The "Captain 25" challenge:

  1. Sign up for the Open Ocean membership
  2. Pass the 10 online courses required for Captain Rank ( See course list below...)
  3. Log at least 25 authenticated days of sailing in your free e-Logbook.  The days must be either “Crewmate” authenticated (meaning that either your crew or skipper has to confirm the time on the vessel), or SailTies authenticated (using GPS). This is easy to do online with NauticEd, and there are no additional fees for authentication.

Once you complete the 3 steps we automatically stop charging your monthly membership fee AND YOU KEEP ALL 22 OF THE COURSES... Yep, when you pass the 10 Captain's courses and log the 25 authenticated days of the sailing requirement to your logbook, you get all 22 of the NauticEd courses to keep forever at no additional charge.
