+ Who is the SLC-jetski designed for?
It is designed primarily for guests aboard commercially operated superyachts who want to operate the yacht’s onboard Jet Ski or personal watercraft in Mediterranean waters.
+ What vessels and operating conditions does it cover?
It covers stand-up and sit-down Jet Skis and personal watercraft up to 4 m / 13 ft, with no more than two riders, for daytime operation within sight of the commercially operated mother vessel. It does not cover small powerboats, tenders, or Jet Boats.
+ What online courses are required and what do they cost?
You must complete the NauticEd Jet Ski Course, which costs $49, and the Navigation Rules for Powerboats Course, which is included free. The separate SLC-jetski license issuance fee is $95.
+ Do I need previous Jet Ski experience?
No. Previous experience and logged boating days are not required. You must complete the online courses and demonstrate every required practical skill set before the captain or first mate can attest to your competence.
+ Who can conduct the practical assessment?
The STCW-qualified captain or first mate of the commercially operated superyacht can conduct the assessment and attest to the guest’s competence. The yacht, captain, and first mate do not need to be an approved NauticEd Jet Ski school or instructor. The assessor should follow the Captain / First Mate PWC Assessment Instructions for briefing, assessment, signing, and activation.
+ How long is the assessment and what skills are covered?
The assessment generally takes about 30–60 minutes, but it may take longer if more practice is needed before the captain or first mate can attest to competence. The skill sets cover safety checks, navigation and situational awareness, PWC control, emergency handling, passenger safety, environmental awareness, and sound judgment.
+ What boating-safety credential and documentation do I need?
U.S. citizens and residents must hold a state boater safety card, which can be obtained through BoatUS.org/free. Canadians must hold a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). You must also provide the documentation and professional-looking photo required by NauticEd before the license can be issued.
+ How old must I be?
You must be at least 13 years old to earn the SLC-jetski as a licensed operator. Younger riders must ride with a licensed operator who remains in control. Local authorities and yacht operators may impose higher age limits or additional restrictions.
+ Where is the SLC-jetski accepted?
It is designed for license-required Jet Ski and PWC operation throughout the Mediterranean and is accepted internationally. The SLC-jetski is valid for three years. To renew it, retake and pass the tests for the Jet Ski Course and Navigation Rules for Powerboats Course, then pay the $45 renewal fee. Retesting is free because you retain lifetime access to both courses.
