Documented boating history

Your 50-day experience requirement

Your logbook should be an honest record of your active boating experience. Qualifying days may be on sailboats or powerboats.

50 Days

A day is at least four hours aboard while operating or remaining responsible for the vessel.

25 Master

At least 25 of the 50 days must be as master on a vessel 20 ft / 6.1 m or longer.

16 ft Minimum

All qualifying days must be on vessels at least 16 ft / 5 m long.

At least 25 days of the 50 must be on a vessel 20 ft / 6.1 m or longer. At least 25 days of the 50 must be as master of the vessel greater than 20 ft / 6.1 m. The ultimate length qualification for rental depends on your experience on a similar-sized vessel on which you intend to rent. e.g., if all your experience is on a 20 ft only, then you may possibly be denied a 30 ft rental. Check with your rental company as to what experience they require in addition to the license.

What counts as boating experience?

Time at anchor may count when it is part of an active boating day and you remain responsible for the vessel. Time back at the slip after operations have ended does not count toward the four-hour minimum.

Smaller-boat experience may still be logged as part of your overall boating history, but experience below 16 ft / 5 m does not count as a qualifying day.

Do not count cruise ship, ferry, or similar passenger travel unless you held a crucial operational role such as engineer, first mate, or captain. Never exaggerate or falsify entries; the logbook’s value comes from being an honest record of your true experience.
