Mark and Sharon Noneman have enjoyed sailing all over the world including California, the eastern United States, Bahamas, Caribbean, Puget Sound, the Mediterranean, and Australia on both cruising monohulls and modern cruising catamarans. They are currently living the dream on their own Leopard 48 sailing catamaran, S/V Calypso.
Mark & Sharon started their sailing journey on Mission Bay in San Diego. First on a Hobie cat on Mission Bay and then moving straight to keel boats and cruising catamarans. Capt. Mark earned his United States Coast Guard 100 Ton Master certificate with sailing endorsement. And Capt. Sharon earned her United States Coast Guard OUPV certificate.
Mark is a certified American National Standards Instructional Skipper through NauticEd. And together, Mark and Sharon love working with individuals and couples. Their relaxed style makes it easy to learn sailing skills, but more importantly, what it’s like to live the sailing lifestyle. Whether it’s working as a team to tie up to a mooring or working down in the bilge to clean those strainers, they will show you what sailing life is really about.
Soon after they started sailing in San Diego, they started bareboat chartering. The very first charter was in the BVI more than 10 years ago. Since then, they have not only chartered there many times but they have sailed there on their own boat for many months. They’ve explored all the nooks and crannies and can not only show you the famous spots you’ve read about, but also beautiful coves and bays most charterers don’t even know are there.
Cow Wreck Beach on the island of Anegada. There’s some lovely snorkeling on a beautiful, long beach. And the restaurant and bar are very comfortable for hanging out for an afternoon.
This interactive map is a typical sample itinerary we have put together. More than likely we will do Itinerary #6. The route taken during the week will depend on prevailing and current weather. Tap the top left slider icon to see different routes. Note that Long bay on Night 1 is exposed to a westerly swell – if such conditions exist we will reposition into North Sound.
The BVI is not to missed in this lifetime. In fact, most of us have been multiple times – there is a reason. There is so much to do in such a compact aquatic island nation. Places not to be missed is the Bight and infamous Willie T’s on Norman Island, Cooper Island Beach Club, Savannah Bay and the world renown Baths, North Sound with the famous Bitter End Yacht Club and Saba Rock and Leverick Bay, the remote Dogs, Jost Van Dyke with the hard to find bubbling pools and the famous Soggy Dollar beach area and Foxy’s Restaurant and Bar, Cane Garden Bay, and Sopers hole. You simply can’t fit it all in and that’s why we keep going back.
The closest airport is EIS, Beef Island – Tortola BIV, where it is a 20-minute taxi ride to the base. Alternatively, you can fly into USVI and ferry to Tortola – about a 50-minute gorgeous ride between all the islands to Road Town on Tortola (a five mintue taxi ride to the Sunsail Base.
Mark and Sharron Noneman are Catamaran Veterans of the Caribbean. They own their own catamaran and spend their lifetime sailing the area. They host guests on their own boat year round – training and showing them the time of their lives. This time, Mark and Sharon are hosting the NauticEd flotilla on a Mooring 5000 catamaran.
All fun and aquatic lovers are invited. Whether you are a seasoned sailor bringing your own friends and family, an accomplished sailor wanting to experience the area for the first time with safety in numbers, wanting to stretch your knowledge a little with a professional instructor captain on board, or know nothing and want to enjoy enjoy enjoy this amazing archipelago, everyine will find what they are looking for.
A flotilla is a group of yachts sailing the same route—independently skippered or captained by you—but with shared support, camaraderie, and guidance from a lead boat and local flotilla leader. Think: freedom with a safety net and a built-in crew of travel buddies.
Spots are limited, and the BVI tends to sell out fast every year due to its popularity. Questions? We’re happy to help you plan the perfect Sporades sailing escape.
