What Even is a Yacht Vacation?

(and Why You Might Love It More Than a Resort)

A yacht vacation? Isn’t that, like… for the rich and famous?

Let’s set the scene: you’re at a party, and someone casually mentions they just got back from chartering a yacht in Croatia with their family. All you can think, in between the talk of beautiful isles, charming fishing restaurants, and crystal clear waters, is “I own a vineyard, speak four languages, and manage a hedge fund.”

Yeah. I get it.

Before I began working in the world of yacht charters over a decade ago, I too thought the same thing….yacht charters are for those with mega-wealth.

Spoiler alert: Not true! Chartering a yacht is accessible to you and me. You don’t have to be rich, you don’t necessarily need to know anything about boats, you don’t need to be ‘nautical,’ and you certainly don’t need white boat shorts with a collar-tipped-up polo.

You just need a love for travel, a sense of curiosity and adventure, and a desire to skip the resort pool filled with people and their unicorn blow-up floaties.

So, What Is a Yacht Vacation?

It comes down to this: renting a boat. In a beautiful destination. For a week (or more). That’s it.

Think of it like a floating Airbnb villa with ocean views, changing daily. Your boat is your hotel, transportation, entertainment, and restaurant all in one! It’s freedom on water—no preset schedule, no “dinner dress code,” and definitely no fight for pool chairs.

Just a few months ago, I helped two families charter a catamaran in the BVI during spring break. It was their first-ever boat vacation. By day two, the kids were snorkeling with sea turtles, and the parents were sipping tropical cocktails on the deck wondering, “‘Why didn’t we do this sooner?”

Here’s the basics of how it works (using an expert yacht charter agent, ahem ahem!, makes things easy):

  1. Pick your dates and destination (Caribbean, Med, South Pacific, etc.)
  2. Choose your yacht (catamaran, monohull, sail, or power)
  3. Opt for: Crewed (a floating 5-star hotel); Skippered (someone else steers, you chill); or Bareboat (you’re in charge—no crew, just freedom)

That’s it. Done. I’ll help you book it. Then you go off and live your dream yacht charter vacation. (and then you’re the one casually mentioning it at the next party!).

“But I’m Not a Yacht Person…”

Great! Me either. Yacht charters are not just for “yacht people”—whoever they are.

You don’t need a navy blazer with gold buttons. You don’t need to say “aye aye” (unless you want). And you don’t even need to know the difference between port and starboard.

Ever packed a bag, checked into a resort, and by day two you’re already bored? Yup…me too. A yacht charter fixes that as no two days are the same.

Yacht vacations are for:

  • Couples
  • Families
  • Groups of friends
  • Honeymooners
  • Reformed resort-goers
  • Professionals escaping email

Basically: real people who want more out of their vacation than crowded pools and buffet lines.

What Does a Yacht Vacation Cost?

No kidney required (unless you’re angling for a megayacht with a helicopter pad).

A week on a private yacht—shared among friends especially—can cost less than a hotel or resort stay. And it comes with better views, better company, and no wristband pool entry required.

Some examples:

  • A 51-foot catamaran in the BVI (Air con, water-maker, 5 cabins, fits 10 people) with a skipper for a week. $22,000 total. That’s $4,400 per couple for the whole week.
  • A fully crewed catamaran in Greece in June (10 people, including skipper, hostess, food, drinks, and toys): $27,000 total. That’s about $2,700 per person for a floating Greek island holiday.
  • Compare that with a luxury resort that charges $5,000 for one room. With a view of the parking lot, wristbands, lines everywhere, and a daily fight for poolside towels.

And yes—there are more budget options and ultra-luxe ones too. A good charter agent ( hi, that’s me) helps you match the right boat, crew, and destination to your budget.

A Day in the Life of a Yacht Vacation

What do you do on a yacht charter? Pretty much anything you want! Wake up in a quiet bay. Coffee on the deck watching the sunrise. A swim or snorkel to start your day. Sail (or motor) to a new island or village. Grab lunch at a seaside taverna and explore onshore. Paddleboard or float or shop or discover all afternoon. Dock in a quaint town or drop anchor under the stars.

A client I booked in Sardinia, Italy texted me mid-trip to say, “We just bought cheese from a guy on a donkey.” Nothing else in the text; no follow-up needed. All I could think was yacht charter success!

Unlike a resort—where you’re tied to one location, surrounded by crowds, and limited to fixed activities—a yacht vacation offers daily-changing scenery, adventure, and the freedom to set your own schedule.
