About Grant Headifen

My vision for NauticEd is to ensure that families and friends get out on the water not only safely but with true COMPETENCE, confidently savoring every moment of their valuable time.

Achieving this means being the pinnacle of sailing and boating education—offering comprehensive multi-media theoretical instruction coupled with hands-on, on-the-water training through our global network of American National Standards Instructors. We steadfastly avoid becoming a mere certification mill; our focus is on delivering genuine competence, ensuring our students are well-prepared for enjoyable, real-world boating experiences.

Sailing Certifications made simple

December 17, 2009/by Grant Headifen

The NauticEd Sailing Certification system can be easily explained by the animated infographic below. You will notice that the sailing certification is based on using a combined model of knowledge plus skills plus experience. Together, these lead to competence. At NauticEd, we don’t issue McCertifications of attendance (as you may find elsewhere, and too often […]

Chronicles of a Sailing Yacht Charter Week in the BVI’s: Last day Day 10

November 21, 2009/by Grant Headifen

After a 7am dip in the pool and breakfast at the Mafolie Hotel in Charlotte Amalie, we taxied down to Yacht Haven in the morning. This is a very nice area and mostly provides to the Cruise Ship crowd. On Sunday mornings they have a small farmers market in the court yard. This gives a […]

Chronicles of a Sailing Yacht Charter Week in the BVI’s: Last day on the water – Day 9

November 11, 2009/by Grant Headifen

This was the last day of our wonderful yacht charter sailing vacation to the BVI’s. :( From beautiful Manchioneel Bay, Cooper Island, we set sail at about 8:30am to Road Town. The wind was again out of the east at about 15 knots and so the eta was approximately 9:30. However, in calculating eta’s, one […]

Chronicles of a Sailing Yacht Charter Week in the BVI’s: Day 8

November 2, 2009/by Grant Headifen

Friday 2nd October 2009 Early to rise in Savannah Bay – and a swim to shore. Again, this morning we spent a few hours on the beach at Savannah bay snorkeling, playing beach bats, and strolling along the 750m long beach. We then set sail for Spanish town again were we picked up more ice.  […]

Chronicles of a Sailing Yacht Charter Week in the BVI’s: Day 7

October 26, 2009/by Grant Headifen

Thursday 1st October Savannah Bay BVI: There is nothing like a swim ashore and a morning run on a white sandy beach and that is exactly what I did on Thursday morning. We’d anchored in about 15 ft of water which meant the boat was about 200 meters from shore which made for a nice […]

Chronicles of a Sailing Yacht Charter Week in the BVI’s: Day 6

October 17, 2009/by Grant Headifen

Wednesday 30th September 2009 Bath time on a catamaran is pretty easy and fun for the little one. The catamaran galley is so big that there is plenty of room and the sinks are big. Consequently, Alexandra loved this time of day. The crew set out in the dinghy to explore the rocky coastline and […]

Chronicles of a Sailing Yacht Charter Week in the BVI’s: Day 5

October 15, 2009/by Grant Headifen

Tuesday 29th September 2009 A classic yacht chartering blunder was made on Monday. Instead of filling the tanks with water when the conditions were calm at the east end of Cane Garden Bay we elected to do it Tuesday morning because we were having so much fun on Monday. Overnight, a swell began running out […]

Chronicles of a Sailing Yacht Charter Week in the BVI’s: Day 4

October 14, 2009/by Grant Headifen

Monday 28th September On Monday morning the wind was out of the east. We left the beautiful White Bay on Jost Van Dyke and set  sails for Sandy Spit which took about 2 tacks on a beat into the wind. Sandy Spit is located at the east end of Little Jost Van Dyke and is […]

Chronicles of a Sailing Yacht Charter Week in the BVI’s: Day 3

October 9, 2009/by Grant Headifen

Sunday September 27th 2009 Having a 1 year old on board is a total enjoyment but it takes some extra thoughts. Fortunately, we’d prepared for her sleeping arrangements. We’d selected the Leopard Catamaran based on the forepeak in each hull for Alexandra to sleep. Then we bought a cargo net and some clamps from home […]
